Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been changed either in texture or in mineral composition by the influence of heat, pressure, stress (directed pressure), chemically active solutions or gasses or some other agent without the rock passing through a liquid phase. Any rock type (sedimentary, igneous or other metamorphic) can be subjected any one or any combination of the referenced agents.
For general classification and identification, metamorphic rocks can be divided into 2 textural groups:
- 1. Foliated - those having directional layered aspect of showing an alignment of particles like gneiss.
- 2. Non-foiliated - those having homogeneous or massive texture like marble.
Rockman's metamorphic rock specimens are hand broken as opposed to being crushed which helps keep cleavage and fracture characteristics intact and provides freshly broken areas for better examination of the specimens.
